Corrections Policy

How we fix mistakes — in a certificate, or in the guidance published on this site.

Two different things can be wrong: a report we issued about your property, or something we have written on this website. Both matter, and they are handled differently.

Errors in a report or certificate

If you think your EICR contains an error — a wrong address or reference, a circuit recorded that does not exist, a missing observation, an incorrect code, a wrong test result, or a re-test date that does not follow from the outcome — tell us straight away.

  • We check the error against the inspector’s records within five working days.
  • Where the error is clerical, we correct and reissue the report at no charge, with the reason and date of the correction recorded on it.
  • Where the error is technical and cannot be resolved from the records, we return to the property to re-inspect the relevant part at no charge.
  • We notify anyone we sent the original report to, and we tell you who we notified.
  • A superseded report is retained alongside the corrected one so the history is auditable. We do not quietly replace documents.

Where an error changed the overall outcome — for example an Unsatisfactory recorded as Satisfactory — we will say so plainly and explain what it means for the 28-day remedial period and for your duties as a landlord.

Errors in guidance on this site

Our articles describe regulations, deadlines and codes. If we state something inaccurately, we would rather correct it than leave it.

  • Substantive corrections — where a fact, figure, deadline or legal position was wrong — are made in the text and noted at the foot of the article, saying what changed and when.
  • Clarifications — where the wording was ambiguous but not wrong — are made in the text and noted where the meaning could reasonably have been misread.
  • Minor fixes — typography, spelling, a broken link — are made without a note.
  • Withdrawal. Where an article is wrong enough that correcting it is not honest, we withdraw it and leave a note in its place explaining why.

We do not remove or silently rewrite an article to hide an error, and we do not backdate changes.

When guidance goes out of date

Electrical safety law and BS 7671 change. Where guidance has been overtaken rather than was wrong at the time, we update it and change the review date rather than record a correction.
